"Truth, honesty, empowerment — it's what I want for myself and my readers."
biography
Rupi Kaur is the newest sensation in American poetry, with her first collection of poems, milk and honey, selling over three million copies and staying on the New York Times Bestseller List for forty-one consecutive weeks. Kaur was born in India in 1992, immigrated to Toronto, Canada, when she was five years old, which is where she currently resides. She published milk and honey in 2014 at the age of twenty-three and had a great deal of success. The feminist, tongue-in-cheek, empowering subject matter of her poetry is not uncommon, but her unique syntax and point of view are. Her poems are completely written in lower case, and the only punctuation mark used is the period, sparingly. Her unconventional writing style was inspired by Gurmukhi script, the written form of punjabi; on her website she elaborates: "I enjoy how simple that is. How symmetrical and how absolutely straightforward. I also feel there is a level of equality this visuality brings to the work. a visual representation of what i want to see more of within the world: equalness. And the only punctuation that exists within gurmukhi script is a period." Another interesting aspect of her poetry is that they frequently contain self-drawn illustrations of objects and ideas of the poems; they have been included on this site. Furthermore, Kaur takes on subjects that other writers leave alone, including rape, abuse, infidelity, inadequacy, and even body hair, facilitating conversation for women and men worldwide about those issues, many of which are finally come to true, deep consideration and discussion. Kaur's second publication, released in 2017, the sun and her flowers, tackles similar themes.
Put shortly, Kaur is leading a literary revolution with her messages and delivery, and by defining her own, new movement, she is in one all her own.
